In August of this year I was officially hired by Rainforest Expeditions to become the new Research Director for Tambopata Research Center and the director for the Tambopata Macaw Research Project. Many of you are familiar with the previous work from this project as summarized in the January 1994 issue of National Geographic.

Im August diesen Jahres wurde ich von Rainforest Expeditions als neuer Forschungs-Direktor des Tambopata Research Centers (TRC) und Direktor des Tambopata Macaw Research Project eingestellt. Viele von Euch kennen die bisherige in diesem Projekt geleistete Arbeit aus der Januar-Ausgabe 1994 des National Geographic.

I immediately traveled to Tambopata Research Center (a.k.a. TRC), the primary field site for the project, to assess the state of the project and begin preparations for the coming field season. At TRC the hand raised macaws from previous years, or chicos as they are known, are still sporadically visiting the station looking for unguarded pancakes and crackers that they can steal. They usually arrive around breakfast or lunchtime and swoop down on to the serving table or sneak into the kitchen to steal some breakfast. I offered them bananas as a somewhat healthier alternative. Using a banana as a distraction I read their bands so I could determine how many of the 32 chicos are still alive. During my brief stay in early September, I recorded 7 different individuals: 1 Green-winged Macaw (german description in seperate window) and 6 Scarlet Macaws (german description in seperate window). Of particular interest is that five of these chicos brought along their wild mates. The wild birds were a little better behaved than their mates, but even the wild ones would land up under the eves of the lodge and take bananas from the feeding table outside the lodge.

Ich reiste schnellstens zum Tambopata Research Center (TRC), der Basisstation dieses Projektes um mich über den Stand der Dinge zu informieren und die Vorbereitungen für die kommende Saison der Felduntersuchungen zu treffen. (Artenbeschreibung in Extrafenster) Von besonderer Bedeutung ist, dass fünf dieser Chicos ihre wilden Partner mitbrachten. Diese wilden benahmen sich jedoch etwas zivilisierter, obwohl auch sie unter das Vordach des Hause kamen und Bananen vom Futtertisch nahmen.

A new macaw project began this summer at Tambopata Research Center. Stanford University Graduate Student Kyle Van Houtan has begun in-depth monitoring of the main clay lick. He is conducting, for the first time, all day watches at the lick and documenting not only the use and arrival times for the birds, but also the impact tourism is having on the birds and the lick. His preliminary results show that the macaws may visit the lick at any time of day from as early as 6 AM to as late as 5 PM. He also suspects that passing boats and people on the trails immediately adjacent to the lick are scaring the macaws from the lick.

Am Tambopata Research Center wurde in diesem Sommer ein neues Forschungsprojekt gestartet. Graduate Student Kyle Van Houtan von der Stanford University führt eine ausfürhliche Untersuchung der grossen Lehmlecke durch. Zum erstenmal werden den ganzen Tag über die Beobachtungen registriert. Nicht nur der Gebrauch der Lecke durch die Papageien und deren Ankunftszeiten, sondern auch der Einfluss, den der Tourismus auf die Lecke und das Verhalten der Vögel hat, wird untersucht. Vorläufige Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Aras die Lehmlecke den ganzen Tag über aufsuchen, von etwa 5 Uhr früh bis 17 Uhr abends. Kyle vermutet, dass die Aras durch vorbeifahrende Boote und Leute auf den Dschungelpfaden verängstigt werden und der Lecke fern bleiben.

Based on Kyle’s recommendations we closed the trail closest to the lick and fixed observation blinds to reduce the impacts of tourism on the birds. We are now devising strategies to help reduce the boat traffic past the clay lick. In future years Kyle plans to expand his work to other licks in the area including those with both more and less tourist and boat activity.

Kyles Empfehlungen folgend haben wir den der Lehmlecke am nächsten liegenden Dschungelpfad geschlossen, und getarnte Beobachtungsstände eingerichtet, um den Einfluss des Tourismus auf die Vögel zu verringern. Für die nächsten Jahre plant Kyle weitergehende Untersuchungen weiteren Lehmlecken, auch solchen mit mehr oder weniger touristischem Verkehr.

The Macaw reproduction project is set to begin again in earnest in mid-November. The overall goal of the project is to develop and test field techniques that can be used to help endangered macaw populations throughout the tropics. This field season we will continue monitoring the natural and artificial nests around TRC in order to calculate the success rates of macaw nests in both natural nests and nest boxes. We will also determine the longevity of different types of artificial nests, calculate the cost per macaw chick produced by each of the different types of boxes and begin to design new box types for Blue-and-gold (german description in seperate window) and Green-winged Macaws. No chicks will be taken from the nests for hand raising, but we may conduct some supplemental feeding in the nests if we find starving chicks.

Das Macaw reproduction project wird wieder Mitte November starten. Das generelle Ziel dieses Projektes ist die Entwicklung und der Test von Feld-Techniken, mit denen man gefährdeten Ara-Populationen in den Tropen helfen kann. Die Untersuchung der Bruterfolge in natürlichen und künstlichen Bruthölen in der Nachbarschaft des TRC wird fortgesetzt, um einen Vergleich zwischen künstlichen und natürlichen Höhlen ziehen zu können. Ausserdem wird die Haltbarkeit verschiedener Typen von künstlichen Nesthöhlen untersucht und neue Typen für Grünflügelara und Ararauna (Artbeschreibung in Extrafenster) sollen entwickelt werden. Dieses Jahr werden keine Nestlinge zur Handaufzucht aus den Nestern entnommen, aber falls verhungernden Küken vorgefunden werden, soll eine zusätzliche Fütterung eingerichtet werden.

During this winter we will also prepare for the 2000-2001 field season when the project will undergo a major expansion. This expansion will take the project headquarters to Posada Amazonas Lodge a joint project between the Ese’eja Native Community and Rainforest Expeditions. Here we will be working on techniques that will allow captive born birds to be released into the wild. In particular we will develop techniques to hand-raise macaws for release without them learning to approach people for food. This technique will allow us to raise and release birds into areas closer to human settlements and reduce the chance that the birds will fly down to a local person and end up as a pet or in the soup pot. This section of the project will also work with local community members to help teach them about macaw conservation and ensure that the populations of macaws on community lands will be protected long after this project ends.

In diesem Winter werden wir auch Vorbereitungen auf die Feld-Saison 2000-2001 treffen, in der das Projekt eine wichtige Erweiterung erfahren soll. Ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt zwischen Ese'eja Native Community und Rainforest Expeditions mit dem Hauptquartier in Posada Amazonas Lodge soll Auswilderungstechniken von in Gefangenschaft geborenen Vögeln untersuchen. Mit besonderen Techniken sollen Aras so aufgezogen werden, dass sie nach der Auswilderung den Menschen nicht als Futterlieferanten ansehen. Damit können solche Vögel auch in näherer Umgebung von menschlichen Siedlungen ausgewildert werden, ohne dass sie gleich zu einer Person fliegen und zum Haustier oder Mittagessen werden. Dieser Teil des Projektes wird auch mit den örtlichen Behörden zusammenarbeiten und sie über die Arterhaltung der Aras unterrichten, um auch für die Zukunft sicherzustellen, dass die Arapopulationen nach Ende des Projektes weiterhin geschützt sind.

In order to carry out this field season’s work and prepare for next year’s hand raising experiment we must purchase new climbing equipment and begin constructing new nest boxes at Posada Amazonas, right now! Rainforest Expeditions, the owners and operators of TRC, are putting their full support behind the project. They are donating a total of $30,000 in goods, services, and cash to macaw research this year and will increase their total commitment to nearly $40,000 next year. Unfortunately, this just covers the cost of transportation, food, lodging and basic salaries for the project staff.

Um all diese Feldarbeiten und das Handaufzuchtprogramm im nächsten Jahr durchführen zu können müssen so schnell wie möglich neue Kletterausrüstungen gekauft und neue künstliche Nisthöhlen bei Posada Amazonas gebaut werden. Rainforest Expeditions, die Eigentümer und Betreiber des TRC, unterstützen das Projekt mit aller Macht. In diesem Jahr wird das Projekt mit $ 30.000 and Gütern, Dienstleistungen und Bargled unterstützt. Diese Spende wird im nächsten Jahr auf $ 40.000 erhöht. Leider deckt diese grosse Summe gerade den Aufwand für Transport, Nahrungsmittel und Unterkunft der Projektangestellten.

The Tambopata Macaw Research Project needs your help. Rainforest Expeditions is doing its share, but without the help of bird lovers and aviculturists like you, the project may fail.
